Our Story

Buns n’ Bagels is a small start-up home business run by myself, a British expatriate and my local wife. We started baking a few years ago to satisfy a craving for English bakery products that were fairly limited in Malaysia. During the pandemic, we began sharing our baking with friends and family and everything just grew from there. Our small and humble business is still young and at the moment we only bake to order and deliver locally in areas around our home in Shah Alam.

Raised in East London

Bagels have been a staple diet in Hackney, London where I grew up way back in the 1970s. Occasionally we’d visit a famous bakery in Brick Lane called Beigel Bake which I guess would be the inspiration for me to start making home baked bagels and try to bring a bit of the East End to Malaysia.

Naturally, we would never claim that our bagels were comparable to one of the most famous bakeries in London, but creating our own offers a delicious alternative.

Cornish Delights

To the south western point of England lies Cornwall, a beautiful part of the country renowned for wonderful beaches, pasties, ice cream and yarg cheese. Another delicious but lesser known delight are their rock cakes, which are basically like scones but formed to resemble small rocks.

Sticky Treats

When I was young, my mother used to buy fruit buns from the local bakery as a treat. Nearer to Easter they would add on a cross to make hot-cross buns, but to keep selling them during the rest of the year, the cross was removed and a thick layer of sticky sugar was added instead. One of the fondest memories I have as a child was getting my fingers and mouth all covered whilst indulging in a sticky fruit bun and mum instantly regretting her choice to buy them.
